IIT Madras WSAI AI Studio 2026: Apply From October 3

IIT Madras' WSAI AI Studio Helps Researchers Turn AI Research Into Start-ups; Applications Begin 3rd October

Chennai: It takes a lot of transformation for a research paper to be market-ready. If you have an AI-based prototype, it takes a lot of infrastructure to convert it into a company. WSAI (The Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) at IIT Madras has recently developed the AI studio to address this gap.

The launch of the AI studio is scheduled for this week, and applications begin on 3 October 2026. The studio will support not just IIT Madras-based researchers, faculty and students, but will also support entrepreneurs and academia based researches.

What is the IIT Madras WSAI AI Studio?

The AI studio will help a research-based invention to transition from the research lab to product development, funding and company formation. After the AI studio makes its selection, the teams will be required to develop their market position, extend the technology, and be prepared for IIT Madras’s incubation services. This strategy aligns with the research policy of WSAI, which combines deep AI research and practical applications of AI to healthcare, finance, agriculture, manufacturing, education and many more.

Who qualifies to apply for the IIT Madras AI Studio?

The first round will consider applications from

  • IIT Madras and WSAI researchers
  • Academic founders from other institutions
  • External entrepreneurs
  • Founders with an AI, ML or data science startup
  • Individuals or teams with an early idea in these fields

This program is more comprehensive than a typical campus startup program since participants are not required to be a part of IIT Madras.

IIT Madras WSAI AI Studio: Program specifics

Applicants will begin with a training and bootcamp program to better accommodate a large number of applicants. A smaller number of applicants will be invited to participate in the full AI Studio program.

The selected startups will begin a 6-month development and assessment program. For startups that progress into an institutional funding round, the program will be extended by 3 more months. WSAI will sponsor two cohorts every year with the application deadline expected in winter and spring.

What benefits will the selected startups receive?

The full program participants will receive the following:

  • Seed funding
  • Cloud and Computing credits
  • Access to research labs
  • Data and research support
  • Mentorship
  • Entrepreneurship training
  • An Entrepreneur in Residence
  • Faculty and domain experts advice

The aim is to provide startups with the tools to progress beyond the Proof of Concept stage, help founders build technology, and validate customer interest and be ready for the next round of funding. Successful startups will eventually become a part of the IIT Madras Incubation Cell.
